Dave's Favourites - Resurrection

This painting was inspired by the process of growth, trying to depict the destruction of the old, and the rebirth of the new. The phoenix represents rising from the ashes in a union of life, represented by the mushroom, and the opposing phoenix.

The stairs towards the sky represent a pathway out, to a higher level. As the water spills through the buildings to flood out the old and replenish, the crosses represent the idea of a narrow pathway out towards the sun. I decided to call it Resurrection because it was the strongest theme running throughout the piece.

This is one of the first pieces I did when I started paining, it's still unfinished.

The process has taken up to four years, I cant stop adding to it!

This is a common problem with a lot of artists, not knowing when to actually stop.

Some days I just wanted to throw it into the fire and be done with it! But gas prices were to high to burn it. During the early stages of development, images like faces, began to appear on the road as if the painting was forming on its own.

I gave into my compulsions. I can't stop revisiting it. The work has evolved over the years due to the layers that have been added and removed. This painting has accompanied me through both difficult and joyful times and has developed alongside me.

The canvas has so many layers that it has torn. I guess I'll need to stop soon to avoid ruining the entire piece. Perhaps the work is complete when I can no longer continue working on it.

The work is a development using many different mediums. acrylic paint, pastels, markers, gloss and God knows what! There will be a couple versions of this piece on print as it develops.

This work is like my companion and I will be sad that this creative journey will some day come to an end. Its always been there to chip at gradually, slowly Shaw-shanking my way out of something? Maybe it can only be complete when I'm ready to move on.

I hope you enjoy the work and thanks for reading.
